The City of Montréal is located on the Trans Canada Highway, on the banks of the St. Lawrence River. The area of Montréal is an amalgamation of 19 distinct Boroughs.
The population of Montréal numbers approximately 1,789,565.
HISTORY
During his second voyage to Canada in 1535, Jacques Cartier became the first European to see Montréal from Mount Royal, the lookout to which Native people from the nearby village of Hochelaga had brought him. Many years later, in 1642, Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve founded Ville-Marie de Montréal, which later became known simply as Montréal.
The little colony experienced many attacks from local Aboriginal bands until 1701, when the "Indian Treaty" was signed. French rule came to an end in 1760 with the capitulation of Montreal to the British. Five years later, Montréal was under American control for seven months, and in 1813, the Americans made another attempt to capture the town.
Montréal was incorporated as a city in 1832. After Confederation, it experienced great development. Once again, in 1951, a new surge of development and construction began, that is still continuing. Montreal was the site of "Expo-67", a World's Fair that was held to celebrate the Centenary of Confederation; host to the 1976 Summer Olympic Games; and is the site of the annual Canadian Grand Prix Formula-1 race.
TODAY
Because of its strategic location on the seaway, Montréal is a major port for oceangoing vessels along the St. Lawrence. Consequently, the city accommodates a great portion of the import and freight traffic coming into Canada.
Montréal is largely a cosmopolitan city, offering a variety of entertainment. It is considered the fashion centre of Canada making shopping a unique adventure. Old Port Montréal offers historical buildings and cobblestone streets lined with shops and restaurants. In the summer street performers and live music add to the excitement.
